Bad/Good Website Smackdown

 Citation Generators



In early days of college, proper citation is vital for a successful academic career. Different classes require different formats for citations, which can be confusing for freshman students. That is why it is important to understand how to use citation generators online. They are a great tool for students learning how to properly format MLA, APA, or Chicago style papers. For my website SmackDown I chose examples of a good citation generator and a bad citation generator. I determined the usefulness of both websites with three categories; website aesthetic, user friendliness and whether or not the information provided was useful. For the bad example I chose Citation Machine by Chegg. This website was riddled with large ads on their homepage. And it was also very hard to navigate and did not provide as much information as its better counterpart. The better version of the citation generator was Scribbr. It was more user-friendly and had multiple uses, i.e. plagiarism checker and InTEXT citation generator as well. Having a reliable place to double check citations makes academic life much easier.

  Online Collaboration   An important aspect of connected learning is collaborating with individuals you meet through websites. Chapter 5 outlines different ways of social bookmarking as well as providing resources to help readers. According to the book it is important to categorize and archive the content you come in contact with, to help avoid information overload. Social bookmarking is a way people can collect useful information as well as collaborate and network with other learners. There were three websites in particular that stuck out to me. As a political science major, new philosophies and ideas are constantly being introduced within my field. The website RSS readers is a perfect tool to help organize these new ideas being introduced.
