Chapter 2

Developing a Connected Learning Model

Personal Learning Technique

Chapter 2 focuses on the autonomy given to learning by the digital age of education. Our society has become very reliant on technology. I’ve been in college for over three years and within the last year and a half I’ve taken more online courses than I have in classes. That is why the personal learning technique is so important when taking to account digital education. In the book they explain the importance of community learning and having a foundation to support you on your educational journey. I find it important to understand that concept, and they appreciate they emphasize that people learn in a different way. By having that community to reflect on the way they learn, people are more likely to find a way that works for them. According to the book personal learning techniques are, “ learning system in which educators participate by sharing and then learning from others who share with them. (Nussbaum-Beach 31).”

Having this connection with other students or even colleagues helps you understand their point of you. It might also open up different ideas or concepts that you do not fully understand. Having that connection and being able to use what you learned from that community connection, can help you personalize your learning experience. In the putting it into practice section towards the end of chapter 2 I loved how they explained the negatives of lack of cooperation. I especially gravitated towards the idea of an unwillingness to take constructive criticism because people lack that community connection to see it as a positive and not a negative. Becoming involved in your learning community and realizing is okay to not get everything correct on the first try opens you up to improve. As well as put you in a place to receive better opportunities.

  1. Hello, Anna! I completely love the points that you made about the importance of community learning and personal learning! I admire that the book spoke on the reality of individuals and the different learning styles, and it focusing on the good opportunity of an online learning community. It is absolutely important to acknowledge that. Like you, I have had more online classes than in-person classes, and that is because I have an easier time in a self-paced environment. I also feel that I can communicate better and stronger through connection online which is the case for many people like me. Great post, Anna!

  3. Hi Anna! I also have taken more online courses than in person during my college years. For me, I personally learn better this way since I discovered my own personal learning style and can study in a way that promotes better understanding. Throughout my course work, I discovered that. by interacting with my peers also makes a difference. I feel that by interacting online, I learned more as well as felt I wasn't the only one going through the same experiences.
